GRE fiasco Vs my Destiny ???

It was January . I had just about returned from my ieee industrial tour. And it was time to begin my GRE preps on a fresh note . sixth sem terms had started and i had to decide when i wud giv the GRE.

Well the GRE pattern is gonna change from September '07. Also my sixth sem exams wud get over by around mid- june appx. So two months of study time after d xams and i cud giv a crack at the GRE.So i fixed my eyes on AUGUST as the ideal time to giv the GRE.

Well lots was to happen after dat.

GRE dates come and go.Dates for a particular month are opened.And then filled by students.Every year. This year was no different. March dates opened and were filled up. So were April then May then June. Then I started checking for the time when August dates wud open up.

July dates came out and I looked at them pass by every day .... twice a day till there were no more . For the whole of next week, I kept checking the website for the opening of August dates.

Then came the shocker ... News flashed on the ETS website : "No GRE to be held in the month of August" . All dates for July were already filled up and only few for May / April were yet available.

decided not to take ne of those as that wud clash wid my viva's and exams . well then it was all about waiting ... Hoping against hope that new dates for july wud come out and i wud snatch them as and when they do come....
well,but i was not alone in this situation... ...

ets .org might have never experienced the kinda traffic it did during those few days . not once, not twice, but every day , every hour , every minute ......... every1 was checking the ets website for ne hint of more dates opening up.....

And they did . It was the February 13 . The dates didnt last for more than an hour . Such was the unprecedented rush that the ets server was overloaded and could not handle the excess requests !

Where was I ? Well, I was with my granny who was pretty unwell....in fact...she passed away later in the afternoon the same day.
In fact I came to know of the new dates only the next day.

They always talk about destiny. I always hear about destiny.What is it all about ?I dont yet know.But sometimes coincidence can be too strong to neglect !

Well, current status is that I ll be givin the new GRE in September / October. In fact, i think i like the pattern of the new GRE more. Its more understanding based and less memory oriented.And ppl who know me know how goooood a memory i have !!! They dont call me "RAM" sometimes for nothing !!!

I guess whatever happens happens for the best ! Or is dat just a consoling statement made when u dont get wat u want !!!

The fun begins ... Again !

Well after the long time off, I am back to the thing I love doing the most ... commenting about stuff around me....

and doing dat as if someone's gonna gimme an award for dat !

Well, as my ship sets sail into this infinite journey... all I wanna say to myself is :

Reservations about reservations

A lot of generations of general category students hav had to bear d brunt of reservations. And as if it wasnt enough,the govt wants more of it.

From the moment Arjun Singh announced his intentions of bringing in another 27 % quota for the obc's, I hav been restless,anxious and more anxious day by day.When the time had come to scrap all the quotas,here we are adding more quotas to the list ........ Why is it happening ? Why now ?

Let me start by putting things in perspective. Why were the reservations done in the first place ? The reservations, as I understand , when first introduced were meant to encourage the 'lower castes' to come out in the open and feel a sense of belonging in the social life making progress along the way.

50 years down the line many generations have benefited from these reservations.As a result what we are seeing is that those who are using the reservations are not the ones who need them.... especially at the tertiary level of education ( grad and post grad) . At this level whatever changes are made in the education setup directly affect the progress of the country.And yet there are a large number of seats (actually reserved for the 'lower castes' ) which are not filled at all.....case in point: IITs,IIMs.This really makes a mockery of the whole quota system.

However this doesnt imply dat there should b reservations at d primary level.Even dat would be bad as you would be subjecting impressionable students to caste based discrimination at a very young age.

So now we come to d question whether reservations based on financial status would solve d problem.

Only students who come from an economically backward class are deprived of d best facilities.In dat case,is reservation on d basis of financial position d way to uplift d needy ?

well i think reservation in any form is not a good situation in the long run.

Reservations even on d basis of financial position can only b a temporary soution...

d real solution lies in improving our primary and secondary education system at d grass root level (govt. schools and colleges ) ....and i mean upgrading it to a very high level.....d quality of education in these schools shud be world class...

Consider this.
Suppose a student coming from an econonomically poor background gets to study (free or sponsored ofcourse) in govt schools
(primary/sec/higher sec) wich are on par wid the best in the country.

By the time he completes his primary / secondary education ....
he wud be atleast competant wid all the other students
who study in private schools

However, this is not wat is happening.

Case in point:
jus compare the municipal schools and some of the private schools.
In a majority of municipal schools d teachers are missin,infrastructure aint good....
and basically the quality of education imparted is of poor quality

in such a situation hw do u except students from such schools to compete
wid those who hav received better quality education ?

The real way out is far from d risk-free,appeasing,votebank methods adopted by d govt.Neither is it doin ne good to d needy nor to d development of d nation

Its time we wake up from our ignorance and do something about it.
